Apr 4, 2025

Department of Pharmacognosy and Institution Innovation council organized a webinar on “Protecting Intellectual property Rights and IP management for start-ups” on 04/04/2025 at 2.30 to 3.45 PM at new seminar hall, and Ms. Shravya, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutics was the master of ceremony.

Ms. P. Ashwini Pai, the dynamic Patent manager at RamSmith and Associates, Delhi, delivered the talk. She has expertise in overseeing intellectual property operations and optimising legal document work flow. She served as WOS-C trainee at PFC, TIFAC under Kiran-IPR scholarship scheme.

The speaker provided an introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), explaining key characteristics such as exclusivity, territoriality, the need for registration or grant, and their limited duration. She also discussed various types of IPR, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and how they are different from trade secrets and geographical indications. The importance of patents in the pharmaceutical industry was highlighted, along with an overview of what can be patented in the field of pharmaceuticals. She also outlined the steps involved in obtaining a patent, which include determining the patentability of the work, conducting a patent search, preparing the patent application, filing it, undergoing examination, responding to office actions, and ultimately obtaining the patent.

Start-ups are often driven by innovative ideas, products, and services, which are typically protected through patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. However, the fast-paced and resource-limited environment of start-ups may lead to inadequate attention to IP protection, potentially undervaluing its importance.

The talk was highly successful, offering valuable insights and practical advice that benefited both students and faculty members.
